Folding fan is normally used for cooling down or as sunshade, and besides, you can also enjoy scent with a little perfumed folding fan. Thin and long ribs made of bamboo are riveted together at the end and coverd with a paper or cloth. Folding fan can be opened and closed. When it's closed, the shape is like a bar and easy to carry. The shape of folding fan opend is called “suehirogari” in Japan which means that it widens towards the end, therefore symbolized development, prosperity and good fortune.

A folding fan featured “Shichirigahama Beach, Sagami Province” from “the series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji (Fugaku sanjurokkei)” by Katsushika Hokusai who painted Mt. Fuji and people in the Edo period.
