Shikishi Paperboard is for paintings, calligraphic works, illustrations, autographs, waka/haiku-poetries and so on. It is said that the begining to use this kind of paperboards was Heian and Kamakura period (8th~14th century); upper-class people have written waka-poetries on square colored papers and sticked them to the shoji sliding doors or folding fans. It is not clear since when the present shape pasted a core paper and 2 sheets of paper together has begun, but Shikishi paperboards has various sizes and any Japanese manufacturers produce under the same standard. It is composed of the front paper, core paper and back paper. The core paper is made from eco-friendly recycled paper. The edges of this paperboard are rolled up by a gold aluminium-tape. This tape makes the paperboard more bright. A lot of different kinds of papers are used in the front papers to be able to choose the right one. Appearance and running of colors on paperboards depend on manufacturing processes, length of the fibers and so on, so many people use differnt paperboards suited well to their arts of paintind and painting materials.
